How Many Pieces Are There In Backyard Jenga?

A backyard Jenga set has 54 pieces which are similar to the traditional household game except that their measurements are in inches instead of cm.

Check out this article for more information about the dimensions of backyard Jenga, whether or not it’s easy to make at home and how to properly play the game.

How Big are the Pieces in a Backyard Jenga Set?

The backyard pieces are typically 1.5 inches thick, 2.5 inches wide and 7.5 inches long.

They’re just bigger versions of the home version of Jenga.

The home version pieces are 1.5 cm thick, 2.5 cm wide and 7.5 cm long.

The pieces are big enough so that it is unlikely to lose them when playing outside and they are not going to break when playing.

The pieces are also relatively light that older kids can be involved with this game without adults needing to carry/moove the pieces for them.

Knowing from experience: I would recommend playing with the game away from other objects/people. For example – in the center of a patio away from doors, windows and any outdoor furniture.

Can You Easily Make a Backyard Jenga Set?

Whipping up a backyard Jenga set is pretty easy to do, people do it so well that it’s perfect to make your own backyard Jenga if you have what you need to make one.

Sometimes premade sets can be tricky to get ordered or even to your home, so making one is super fun if you have the tools.

You just need 5 of the 2”x3”x8” boards.

Then you will use a circular saw to cut each of the boards into pieces that are 7.5 inches long. You will get 12 of them from each board, then you will have a total of 60 pieces, you only need 54, but you will have a few extra.

After that it is up to you if you want to sand and paint them, I advise sanding for safety, but painting is up to you.

Are All Backyard Jenga Pieces the Same Size?

Playing backyard Jenga

All of the pieces in a backyard Jenga set are the same size, and they have to be the same size for the game to work.

A piece lengthways needs to be able to fit 3 other pieces turned 90 degrees along the side.

This is the way all the pieces should be stacked, and the sizes must align, as otherwise they won’t stack correctly, and your game will be flawed right from the start.

In short: If the stack is not solid, then as soon as someone takes a piece out then the stack will most likely fail long before it should, which is going to equate to an incorrect game.

How Do You Play Backyard Jenga?

Painting Jenga Blocks

Once you have your backyard Jenga pieces ready, whether you have purchased this product or made it yourself, you need to pile it up before you can play.

You will need at least 54 pieces, that’s how many pieces need for one game:

  • Lay 3 pieces down on a flat area, preferably not a grass area as your stack will not be secure. Aim for not to be on a grass surface, it’s better to find a flat, stable, non-moving surface such as a patio, deck, or concrete so your stack will be stable.
  • Once you laid down 3 pieces side by side, take another set of 3 pieces and lay those on top, but this time turn them on a 90 degree angle.
  • As the third layer, set another 3 pieces down but once again turn at a 90 degree angle so they are in line with your first layer.

Continue this process until your 54 piece stack is ready.

Then to play, have players take turns to take a piece from the stack and if at any time you pull a piece and the tower is moved and fell over, you are out of the game.

Who is the winner? The player with the most pieces pulled from the pile has now won the game without having the stack topple by your hand while pulling a piece.

Is Backyard Jenga Safe to Play With Kids?

Backyard Jenga for kids

This is a kid-safe game, and although kids can safely play the game, adult supervision will have to be present for a variety of reasons.

Small children will not be able to take pieces higher up on the stack than their height, so an adult will have to hold the pieces for the kid.

Also, small children when the stack may fall, could be harmed by the stack falling on top of them. That can be dangerous!

Some things to keep in mind – The pieces are not heavy but do have sharp corners which could cause damage if you are not careful.

Adults don’t necessarily have to participate in the game but they need to supervise and be there to help if a child needs assistance in picking pieces from the stack.

Final Thoughts

Wrapping it up, how many pieces in jenga?

There is 54 pieces in a pack of jenga, it can be purchased from game shops all over the world but to be honest it’s fairly easy to make at home if you have the right tools and even the knowledge to operate the tools.

The jenga game should not be played with underage kids with out an adult keeping an eye on it.

The jenga pieces & falls are large, if you had younger children and they were under the stack and it fell then they may have been injured or worse. jenga is a fast recomended outdoor summertime game played by many globally.
