21 Yellow Fruits – Some May be New to You!

A dining table or kitchen countertop is just missing something when there is no fruit bowl.

Why is that?

Because fruits are a little source of variety, and they provide essential vitamins and minerals that promote physical and mental health.

Also, fruits give tables color and appeal. Just imagine all the colors you can mix together (red,yellow,orange,green and the additional colors) guarantee colorful and enjoyable meal times.

Yellow also increases your appetite. The color of yellow automatically signals happiness. Specifically, the brain releases the feel good hormone (serotonin) when it see’s yellow.

For This Reason – It makes sense to consider other yellow fruits to add to a fruit bowl. Here are some yellow fruits you can eat more often to add to your diet.

1. Bananas

Bananas are what you’d probably call a go-to yellow fruit.

Archaeologists have evidence of bananas as early as 8000 B.C. in New Guinea, affirming that they are one of the earliest cultivated fruits.

Not only are bananas cool, but they also help your physical and mental health:

  • Bananas contain tryptophan, which is an essential amino acid that triggers the secretion of melatonin and serotonin; this relieves the symptoms of anxiety, depression and even insomnia.
  • Bananas can aid in weight loss! Each finger contains 30g carbohydrates and 3g dietary fibre, that will leave you full for hours! And the sweet taste can help cause cravings to go away!

Scientists are suggesting athletes replace their sports drinks with water and bananas; both provide the same performance output, but from consuming bananas, athletes enjoy better recovery!

Along with serotonin, bananas promote dopamine to help with oxidative stress.

Even though bananas are relatively harmless, I wouldn’t eat more than 5 a day; eat too many, and you’re bound to get sleepy! And there is of course the sugar to worry about with your teeth.

2. Papaya

Papayas (aka pawpaws), are originally from the tropics.

In prior times, the fruits were not available year-round, but today they can be found at almost every grocery store.

Papayas are known for their sweetness, bright color, versatility in recipes, and health benefits.

Some of the potential health benefits of eating papaya include:

  • faster wound healing
  • more controlled blood sugar levels
  • less chance of cancer, diabetes, and heart disease

Additionally, papayas are soft and fleshy which makes them great for many recipes.

Heads-up! If you are allergic to latex please avoid eating papaya as it contains chitinase enzyme that causes a cross-reaction to occur between latex and the foods it contains.

Some people do find that ripe papaya smells bad. If this concern applies to you, try mixing the papaya with lime juice (to neutralize the odor).

You can make tea from the plant’s leaves and its extract has some therapeutic properties. Guava fruits are high in antioxidants, fiber, minerals, and vitamins.

The antioxidants in guavas (because of its compatibility with Vitamin C) lycopene, quercetin, and other polyphenols react with vitamins, destroying the stability of free radicals and potentially reducing cancer risk.

Having one fruit provides sufficient fiber which can help prevent diabetes and regulate blood sugar levels.

Most people consume guava fruits in a sliced or unsliced form. Some people put guava in their yogurt or others put them in smoothies, but it will leave a pleasant sweetness in your mouth.

Guava fruit does not have any known side effects.

Though, pregnant women and nursing mothers should consult a doctor before using guava leaf juice. The same rule applies to anyone under certain medical prescriptions.

Once again, with that rough skin, it’s a bit more difficult to tell what condition a fruit is in. But other indicators such as color and peel smell and feel could help you decide. 

Pineapples are firm and green when they are mature. As it ripens, it will turn yellow in color. 

At this stage, the fruit will also have a wonderful fruity scent. And when it is ready to eat, the skin will give a bit under pressure. 

There are also a variety of components in pineapples that can improve your overall health. Some benefits of eating the fruit are: 

  • Better digestion
  • Improved immunity
  • Faster recovery after surgery

Most importantly, it has proven to lower the risk of:

  • certain cancers
  • diabetes
  • and heart disease 

You can buy any fresh pineapple fruit in grocery stores all year round. You can enjoy the fruit in canned, dehydrated, or frozen forms. You can add the fruit to various types of food like pizza, salads, smoothies, etc. 

Eating pineapples is safe for you, unless you are allergic to them. Diabetic patients should monitor how much pineapple they eat to prevent sudden changes to their blood sugar. 

Mind you, if you eat too many pineapples you may face some negative consequences. The fruit contains bromelain, which has effects on blood clotting mechanisms. 

Bromelain also causes tongue burning and/or itching in those made sensitive by previous exposure to it. It can also make some people nauseous and cause diarrhea (especially in the case of consuming unripe pineapples).

In addition – Apricots are very high in potassium. Potassium helps regulate nerve stimulation and muscle contractions. It also helps transport nutrients to cells and to remove waste from the cells.

The fruit can be eaten raw without any serious adverse effects. Wash the fruit, cut it and remove the stone when eating it.

Or, you can consume the fruit cut as dried or frozen; which adds to the taste in yogurts, smoothies or porridge.

Apricots are safe to eat as long as you don’t over indulge.

But you do have to watch out for the seed. It contains amygdalin, which is a precursor to toxic cyanide. Eating the seed can lead to nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea or ultimately death in more serious cases.

Barhi is sweeter as a fresh fruit than a dried fruit- people frequently say it is the sweetest and creamiest of the date palm fruit.

But sweetness is related to ripeness, as the ripest dates taste like butterscotch, while the ever so freshly ripe taste like fresh sugarcane.

Barhi is smaller than the other data types but thicker. They are also rounder than other types and say attached to the vine when mature.

They start off yellow and have a matte gold color and a crunchy texture when fresh. They taste like sugarcane. When ripening the fruit turns brown and soft.

In the realm of Nutrients – it is higher dietary fiber – which aids in gut health, potassium – needed to balance body fluids, and manganese – which contributes to the growth and development of connective tissue.

With the caloric value, just keep in mind how often you eat dates.

If you eat too many dates, the sugar will raise your blood levels and you raise your risk of heart disease and hypertension.

If you have renal disease don’t have dates with the potassium levels. Wheezing could also be increased in individuals with asthma after dates were consumed.

When ripe it’s egg-like in color, resembling a hard-boiled egg yolk from the outside, which explains its name. The fruit can be either round, heart-shaped, or oblong depending upon the variety.

To eat the fruit of an eggfruit, it is best to simply split or pull it apart right off the tree. You may also cut it with a knife and use a spoon to scoop out the pulp.

You can use the pulp in smoothies, purees, and pudding, it can be any flavoring in sweet baked goods such as bread, muffins, and pies.

Eggfruit is very high in beta-carotene, which improves vision, and is a good source of many minerals such as calcium and iron – this can stimulate production of red blood cells, calcium can strengthen bone, and the pulp has lots of dietary fiber.

Lemons don’t taste very good on their own and many do not like to eat them as such; however, lemons are a popular fruit my theirselves!

Lemons contain flavonoids that may lower the risk of ischemic stroke in females.

Most common is ischemic stroke, where a blood clot stops oxygenated blood flow to the brain.

GOOD IDEA – You can also make lemon water with lemons. Also, instead of beverages, you can switch your juices and sodas for lemon water which is a health benefit – less sugary drinks means better health! In addition, drinking lots of lemon water can prevent fluids-deficiency in your body (dehydration).

Unlike many fruit, lemons will not ripen, or get better, once they are picked, they will only decline.

Lemons will last the longest when kept at cool dry place, not in direct sunlight.

Lemons have no significant side effects. 

However, they are acidic fruit and juices and other, more serious side effects are mouth ulcers and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) such as heartburn, belching, and regurgitation.

10. Loquat

Loquat is a fruit tree that’s native to China, and it’s a member of the rose family!

Although most commonly cultivated for its fruit, the leaves can also have medicinal value.

The fruit is small and round and typically grows in clusters. The most common fruits are yellow, though some varieties of loquats produce fruits that are red and orange as well.

The leaves, fruits, and seeds of the loquat tree contain powerful compounds that can have valuable medicinal properties.

The fruit contains carotenoids and flavonoids which are antioxidants often found in fruits and vegetables that help lower the risk of chronic diseases, which can put one at risk for heart disease and cancer. The leaves are also useful in creating herbal tea.

There are many ways one can eat the fruit.

Some ways can include the fruit as an extract, as a snack, a supplement, or tea. If one eats the fruit whole, remove the skin or slice the fruit and eat around the skin.

Generally eating too many loquats, if you are allergic you may harm yoursel. but most adverse reactions are minor inconveniences. in more severe cases, adverse reactions can include anaphylaxis.

For these reasons – It’s safe to check with a doctor before consuming loquats, and never chew down on the loquat seeds, which can be poisonous.

It has been cultivated for over 4000 years.

There are different types of mangoes, each a different shape, size, and flavor. Some people call mangoes the king of fruits because they are really adaptable.

Mangoes have a lot of nutritional value, in addition to being sweet. Mangoes contain several vitamins and minerals that help boost immunity and overall health.

In addition to their sweet taste, mangoes have a relatively low caloric density. One cup of mango cut up contains less than half of the calories compared to other foods of similar volume!

Because of its low-calorie density, mangoes are a great food for people who want to cut back on their calorie intake and still feel full.

While grapefruit juice has some health benefits, the juice lacks fiber.

In processed they juice remove pectin (fiber) and rind, essential for digestive health. It is better to eat the whole fruit.

Keep in mind all of the grapefruit and grapefruit bodies can interact with some drugs, as they include an enzyme that inactivates their work.

Some drugs that can interact with grapefruit juice:

  • anihistamines
  • anxiety
  • anticoagulants (blood thinners)
  • antihypertensive (hypertension) medications
  • organ transplant medications
  • some corticoids

Sometimes grapefruit can have interactions with contraceptives – it does not render them ineffective, but it will increase the risk of adverse effects, such as breast tenderness and nausea.

Okay listen up! Quince is a neglected fruit, and that’s a shame because it is delicious and is related to apples and pears.

Quince is a member of the rose family and is the only plant in the genus Cydonia. The yellow fruit is pear-shaped, and more pointy bumps than a pear.

Don’t get flowering quinces confused with quinces. These two have similar fruits but flowering quinces are actually shrubs.

Quince is rare since you won’t find the fresh fruit in your local grocery store. You probably won’t find it in a regular farmers’ market either.

If you are lucky, you can find the products made from quince, like pastes and sauces. You can also try finding quinces at local markets that sell unusual fruits and vegetables.

Some amazing benefits of quince include:

  • reducing the risk of cancer
  • aiding with weight loss
  • reducing cholesterol
  • helping the gut
  • and increasing immunity

Quince also reduces inflammation, protects against allergies, and supports circulation.

So far, nobody has reported negative side effects from eating quinces. The seeds of the quince do have traces of cyanide, so avoid the seeds.

14. Pomelo

The tree is the main parent stock of the grapefruit, it grows wild and is not hybridized. Pomelo are eaten culturally, during festival occasions in Southeast Asia.

Pomelo comes in more types than oranges (domesticated and wild).

Every variety has an individual balance of tartness, sweetness and bitterness – for the most part, pomelo taste like grapefruit.

Most expensive pomelo – to me – is more tasty than grapefruit. Honey pomelo is the most common pomelo and it’s a mildly tart variety with smooth-light yellow skin.

You can eat a pomelo like a grapefruit. I think the easiest way is to eat a pomelo whole.

Otherwise you could make a fruit salad, tart, meal and also juice, if you have the time turn the fruit into hard candy.

If you are allergic to pomelo, avoid eating as it promotes hypersensitivity reactions.

Eating too much pomelo will elevate hydrochloric acid in the stomach resulting in symptoms of GERD and or ulcers. Finally, if you or someone you are with has liver or kidney indicate to eat pomelo in moderation.

15. Durian

Durian is a big ol’ tropical fruit with a hard shell on the outside.

When you crack it open, the inside is mostly yellow pulp (but can be green, red or white).

As soon as you cut durian, it has a very foul smell.

I’ve heard some folks call durian the foulest smelling fruit in the world. A lot of people have described the smell like something similar to raw sewage or rotting animal carcass. It’s that horrible.

Some countries have an active ban of durians to avoid public consumption due to the filthiness of the smell. But the legs it has to stand on, are its fans.

Durians are quite flexible since they can be used in savory and sweet recipes. You can eat the flesh of the fruit, and the seeds, which do need to be cooked.

When cooked, durians taste somewhat like a cross between almonds, caramel, cheese and garlic.

Some possible benefits of durian are:

Oranges have no sodium, unlike other fruit, but they are high in potassium. Eating low sodium is a good way to reduce blood pressure.

On the other hand, eating high potassium is significant in preventing the chances of hypertension by dilating blood vessels.

Simply eating oranges will help regulate your blood pressure.

From experience – eating oranges will help your skin health and appearance. Oranges have vitamin C, part of which is linked to collagen production. Collagen adds structure to the skin and even promotes healing.

Oranges, like lemons, start going bad the moment they get picked. You really should pick them at their ripeness peak. Once you pick oranges, you should store them in a cool place, away from direct sunlight.

If you are a GERD person, eat orange slices not too many.

However, if you eat too many orange slices, can trigger heartburn, regurgitation, and other problems, because they are highly acidic.

When a star fruit is at its most ripe, it has a juicy and crunchy flesh, has some sweetness with a little tartness. Typically the smaller star fruit are tastier then the larger ones, they can also be harder to find.

Star fruit has the presence of beneficial plant compounds consisting of epicatechin, Gallic acid, and quercetin. These are antioxidant properties that can help improve your physical wellness by preventative measures for some types of cancer and help with heart function.

However, it may be harmful to some individuals because star fruit is high in oxalates.
